  • Community - Epidemiology

Community has several Halloween episodes, but "Epidemiology" is not only one of the show's best holiday episodes but one of the most popular Halloween episodes in a sitcom ever. It's easy to see why, with everyone in the study group wearing plot-perfect costumes and a situation that grows increasingly wilder every moment while also referencing a horde of zombie movie moments.

    New Girl - Halloween

A joy of Halloween episodes - especially those that originally aired right around Halloween - is how well a holiday of costumes and pretend counterbalances stories about feelings. How well each couple's costumes match (or don't) is a fun visual mirror in a particularly tumultuous episode of everyone getting more scared of the feelings they're catching than the haunted house Jess is working at.

    Lucifer - Monster

TV shows that are already packed with monsters always know how to bring it for Halloween and Lucifer, back when it aired on Fox, is no different. A Halloween-themed wedding in a graveyard that ends in tears instead of vows and the titular Devil himself dealing with all-consuming guilt is balanced adorably with Chloe's daughter trick-or-treating.

The Magic Schoolbus - Going Batty

Nothing quite compares to the educational weird wonderfulness of The Magic Schoolbus. This Halloween episode all about bats - packed with guest stars from Eartha Kitt to Edward James Olmos voicing the class' parents - is no different. The class is convinced The Friz is a vampire, everybody learns about nocturnal animals while touring a creepy castle, and the puns are on point.

The inevitable happens when Carly, Sam and Freddie do their Halloween webcast from an apartment that is rumored to be haunted - a comical series of scares ensues, and everyone learns a lesson in the end. Meanwhile, Spencer is Spencer, with a pumpkin too big to carve, and the entire show manages to sneak in more little easter eggs for horror fans than one would expect from a wholesome 2000s teen show.

BoJack Horseman - Mr. Peanutbutter's Boos

It's four Halloween sotries in one, easily making up for this being BoJack Horseman's first Halloween episode. Juxtaposing Halloween parties from 1993, 2004, 2009, and 2018, the story further weaves everyone's ever more intertwined history and pattern of choices while also giving the audience a core sample of Halloween costumes and cultural references over the past two decades.
