15 Times TV Shows Foreshadowed Major Deaths

Voting Rules
Vote up the most brilliant foreshadowing.

TV deaths can be some of the most surprising, and at-times infuriating moments on any good dramatic show. Given that some of the best-plotted television demises are frequent fodder for Redditor dissection, and that the smartest shows found tactical ways to plant visual or linguistic Easter eggs presaging these moments, we figured it was high time we turned them into a list. (Yes, we have multiple Breaking Badย entriesย because darn it, it's just that good.) These are the best foreshadowing moments about character deaths that fans could find.

    From Redditor u/EknobFelix1:

In the S5 episode "Here Kitty," a patient thinks that a nursing home cat can predict the death of residents. Dr. House brings the cat to the hospital to prove that the patient is wrong. In one scene, during a differential, House uses a laser pointer to cause the cat to [play around the legs of Dr. Kutner], and tells him he's going to die. Two episodes later, in "Simple Explanation," Dr. Kutner commits suicide.

  • The presaged passing of Buffy's mother, Joyce Summers (Kristine Sutherland), was first caught by Redditor u/Nyhee7, with the correct episode being subsequently cited by a followup from another user, u/paulrbray72

    From u/Nyhee7:

In season 5, Buffy's mom dies of an aneurysm, later in the season, but in episode 1, first time at the new library, Buffy jokes that she hopes the price of her text books won't give her mom an aneurysm. Saw it today.

    The clarification from u/paulrbray72:

Actually Season 4, Episode 1, "The Freshman."

Twin Peaks. The third episode of season 1 features the red suit wearing [little person] dancing, foreshadowing the killer to be revealed later in the next season.

    From Redditor u/emelbee923:

In Season 5, Episode 1, when Lane is on the phone with Dolores regarding the wallet he found in the taxi, he says, “Well... I’ll be here the rest of my life.”

In Episode 11, after being fired for embezzling, he hangs himself in his office.

Meaning was in his office the rest of his life.

Simple, but not something I noticed the first couple of times I’ve watched the series.

There's also the time at the hotel where she says, "What kind of mother would miss their daughter's wedding?" And Ted tears up.

The episode before "Too Far Gone," the Governor comes across a corpse against a tree. He has been beheaded and has a board nailed to the chest which says "LIAR."
